The World Sailing Trust is delighted to announce that it has won the BASIS Sustainable Sport Award 2022 in the Innovation – Process category for the Carbon Fibre Circular Alliance.
The Carbon Fibre Circular Alliance (CFCA) is a collaboration of sport governing bodies, equipment manufacturers, academics and composite specialists. Alliance members include the International Biathlon Union, International Tennis Federation, Union Cycliste Internationale and World Sailing as well as Wilson Sporting Goods, SCOTT Sports, Starboard and OneWay alongside composite specialists, Lineat Composites.
Sport is currently the third largest user of carbon fibre, after the alternative energy and aviation industries and with increasing demand for high performance sports equipment, this usage is set to grow exponentially.
The Innovation – Process category focuses on products and processes that explore new ways of doing things, and develop new solutions for the future and the CFCA faced strong competition from Ascot Racecourse and You.Smart.Thing. The Award ceremony, that was held at Chelsea Football Club in London, saw an impressive group of sustainability experts from across the sport industry come together to celebrate best in class.
“The Trust is delighted to have received this Award,” commented Scott Over, Commercial Director at World Sailing and trustee of the World Sailing Trust. “And, importantly, we accept the award on behalf of all our Alliance partners, and look forward to developing the next phase of the Alliance over the coming months.”
“The CFCA has demonstrated the importance of a collaborative approach to an important issue facing sport. The recycling and repurposing of end-of-life sports equipment is something that affects everyone, whether a grass-roots sports enthusiast or an elite athlete and we need to work together to develop sustainable circular processes so that this equipment does not end up in landfill.”
The BASIS Sustainable Sport Award for Innovation – Process was sponsored by Musco Lighting.
