In its first full year, the World Sailing Trust, World Sailing’s charity, has delivered an extensive programme of work that is reflected in the release of the Trust’s first Impact Report.

The report showcases the projects, programmes and achievements of the World Sailing Trust from its inception in June 2018 through to December 2019.

Dee Caffari, Chair of the World Sailing Trust, commented, “We are proud to share the World Sailing Trust’s first Impact Report. This paints a picture of how we work and the impact that we have created over the last 18 months.

“As a global charity, we rely on organisations, individuals and events to enable us to create impact and to build our reach across the sailing community. We thank all of our supporters and partners for their crucial contribution to our work.”

In 2019, the World Sailing Trust launched five projects which reach across all three areas of the Trust’s focus – Marine Health, Access to Sailing and Youth Pathways.

Marine Health
The Marine Health aspect of the World Sailing Trust’s work aims to harness the power of the sailing community to protect the waters the sport depends on.

Three projects were launched early on in 2019 to support this goal and included:
• Sustainability education materials, supported by 11th Hour Racing;
• Sailing club sustainability tools and guidance, supported by 11th Hour Racing;
• World Sailing Ocean Heroes, partnering with Captain Planet Foundation and the Ocean Heroes Partners.

Access to Sailing
Access to Sailing aims to enhance diversity across the sailing community and greater popularity across the globe.

The fourth project, completed early December, supported this aim:
• Women in Sailing Strategic Review, led by Vicky Low and supported by Andrew Pindar OBE DL

Youth Pathways
Youth pathways aims to develop the next generation of competitive sailors, by promoting and enhancing young people’s participation in all forms of sailing.

The final project announced in 2019 was:
• SailGP Inspire, becoming the programme’s official charity and supporting SailGP’s Inspire’s impact and legacy

Alongside reflections of work delivered in 2019, the Impact Report also outlines 2020 focus areas which include:

Marine Health
– Building a centre of holistic sustainability resources for the whole sailing community;
– Carrying out research and development work to enhance our understanding of the impact of sailing on the environment.
Access to Sailing
– Launching a programme of work to support women and girls, based on the recommendations in the Women in Sailing Strategic Review;
– Growing Para Sailing, particularly in Asia and the Gulf.
Youth Pathways
– Activating the partnership with SailGP Inspire, enhancing the programme’s reach and impact for more young people.
